Oak Point State Park

Oak Point State Park

One of the many things to do in Put in Bay include checking out the Oak Point State Park, the smallest park in Ohio’s state park system. It offers a range of facilities for both boaters and picnickers alike. At only 1.5 acres, this little green jewel is a must-stop during your vacation on Put-in-Bay. With panoramic views of Lake Erie, this makes for a spectacular spot to enjoy the sunrise before heading out on the boat.

Oak Point State Park Details

Located on Bayview Avenue, Oak Point State Park is a short walk from downtown Put-in-Bay. The walk from downtown is really lovely as you stroll along the banks of the lake. Nearby neighbors include Kayak the Bay, the Aquatic Visitors Center, and the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club.

The park consists of a loop that boaters can use to access one of the twenty docks available for rent. This loop is also the starting point for Skip Duggan’s Put-in-Bay Car Parade. Every Sunday spectators can take in the antique cars as they journey from the park into the streets of downtown.

Oak State Park Activities

The twenty docks are available for rent daily or overnight. Make sure to review Ohio Boating Laws before heading out onto the lake. The docks are easily accessible via the U-shaped loop.

These are pretty popular docks so it is always recommended to make reservations far in advance. They are both affordable and conveniently located close to downtown. The docks are known for their low-key, welcoming atmosphere.

The narrow sidewalk located on the north side of the park is suitable for fishing. This is a nice spot for kids and their parents to cast their lines.

A small picnic area is provided for those just off the boat or groups of friends looking to enjoy a picnic with a view. There are plenty of places to pick up food such as the Island General Store. The island’s only full-service grocery store is well-stocked with cheeses, cured meats, and a variety of beverages. Spots like the Village Bakery and Cafe make for an easy and delicious spot to pick up pastries and sandwiches to bring along.

South Bass Island State Park

The parent park to Oak Point is the much larger South Bass Island State Park. This lovely park is located on the southern end of the island, only a mile from the Village. This state park includes a small pebble beach for swimming, docks, playgrounds, and picnic areas. There are also cabins for rent and a campsite for those looking for overnight accommodations.

Put-in-Bay is well known for things like fishing and nightlife, but it does not get the credit it deserves for its amazing green spaces. Between Oak Point, South Bass Island State Park, and all of the awesome nature trails, if you love the great outdoors, you can find a couple of days of joy at Put-in-Bay!
