Dive Into Discovery at the Aquatic Visitors Center
Put-in-Bay’s Hidden Gem for Nature-Lovers and Young Explorers
Tucked away just beyond the bustling heart of downtown Put-in-Bay near Peach Orchard Point, the Aquatic Visitors Center offers a one-of-a-kind, interactive experience centered around Lake Erie’s diverse and delicate ecosystem. Operated by the Ohio Sea Grant in partnership with The Ohio State University, this educational center blends fun, science, and hands-on adventure.
“At the Aquatic Visitors Center, science isn’t something you just read about—it’s something you do.”
Whether you’re a curious child, a science enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful waterside outing, this spot offers engaging activities for all ages.
Hooked on Learning – Free Fishing for Kids
One of the most beloved features of the Aquatic Visitors Center is its free fishing program for kids under 16.
– No gear? No problem. All equipment is provided by the ODNR Division of Wildlife, so kids can drop a line off the private fishing pier and learn the basics of angling in a safe and welcoming environment.
– Educational twist: Kids also learn about invasive species like the Round Goby, which disrupt Lake Erie’s food chain. Any caught gobies are fed to the fish in the center’s aquariums—a fun way to tie biology and environmental awareness together.
“Fishing here isn’t just a fun memory—it’s the first step in understanding and protecting our natural resources.”
🎣 Common Catches at the Pier:
– Bluegill
– Pumpkinseed
– Bass
– Yellow Perch
Explore the Aquatic World Up Close
Inside the Visitors Center, families can explore interactive exhibits and freshwater aquariums showcasing Lake Erie’s many native species. From slimy catfish to shimmering perch, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the life thriving beneath the surface.
👇 Some of the Activities Include:
– Observing fish in aquariums
– Participating in hands-on learning about aquatic food webs
– Learning about fish biology, invasive species, and conservation efforts
– Asking real scientists your fishy questions
Staffed by friendly, knowledgeable educators, the center makes learning about ecology fun, memorable, and accessible for everyone.
A Hub of Research & Innovation
Did you know this facility has deep roots in aquatic science? Originally opened as a state-run fish hatchery, this building played a critical role in maintaining Ohio’s fish populations for decades.
“For over 80 years, fish like walleye, whitefish, and salmon were raised here, helping to stock and sustain the Great Lakes fisheries.”
Today, the Aquatic Visitors Center continues that legacy through ongoing research and conservation programs. Learn about:
– Walleye tracking & migration
– Aquatic invasive species monitoring
– “Dead zone” effects in the lake
– Fish biology and sustainability studies
Visitors can view research in action and even speak with scientists and educators about current projects helping to protect Lake Erie for generations to come.
Saturday Kids Programs
Every Saturday during the season, the center hosts educational programming tailored for children, making it a great family activity. The docks come alive with discovery as kids investigate Lake Erie watershed animals, learn about fish habitats, and get inspired to protect the natural world.
“Learning about nature is the first step toward preserving it.”
Whether it’s through fishing, exploring aquariums, or participating in lab-based fun, the Aquatic Visitors Center instills a sense of responsibility, wonder, and excitement in every visitor.
💙 Why It Matters
Lake Erie is not only one of the most ecologically important Great Lakes—it’s also a source of recreation, economic power, and beauty for the entire region. The Aquatic Visitors Center helps us understand its fragility and why our stewardship is essential.
“It’s up to all of us to care for Lake Erie, so future generations can enjoy its gifts just as we do.”
