The Legendary Whiskey Light at the Round House Bar
The Whiskey Light is one of the most iconic symbols of Put-in-Bay tradition. Suspended above the entrance to the Round House Bar, it serves as the official beacon that the island’s season has begun.
– When the light turns on, it’s not just about drinks — it’s about community, celebration, and the unofficial kickoff to summer.
– Islanders, boaters, and tourists all eagerly await the lighting ceremony each year.
– The tradition spans decades and marks one of the most anticipated weekends on South Bass Island.
“The lighting of the Whiskey Light isn’t just a moment — it’s a signal that the island is alive again.”
🗓️ The Big Event
– The lighting of the sign takes place at 2:00 PM.
– Live music and entertainment carry the celebration into the evening, with performances by local bands and popular musicians.

“When that light turns on, the island transforms — it’s like flipping the switch on summer.”
A Look Back: The Round House Bar’s Storied History
The Round House Bar is more than a venue — it’s a piece of living history.
📜 From Ice Cream to Iconic Entertainment
– Originally built in 1873, the structure opened as The Columbia Restaurant.
– It was beloved for its wide variety of:
— Beers and wines
— Ice cream and cold treats (yes, even cottage cheese!)
“Before it was a bar, it was a place of hospitality and refreshment — the spirit of the island was always there.”
Transformation into the Round House Bar
– About 15 years later, it was renamed the Round House Bar.
– In 1944, the Greunke family purchased the building for $11,000.
– They hired the Cincinnati Brewing Company to build the now-famous circular bar.
“A round bar for a round house — it was meant to bring everyone together.”
Music in the Round
– Mrs. Greunke, a gifted pianist, used to perform live music — her piano stylings filled the space as patrons gathered in the round.
– To avoid playing with her back to the crowd, the stage was relocated to its current central location.
– The Greunkes also added the acoustic canopy in the cupola to improve sound quality.
Modern Era and the Iconic Red Look
– In the 1950s, the McCann family took over ownership.
– They’re the visionaries behind the Round House’s iconic bright red exterior, which remains a landmark feature.
– Remarkably, much of the original:
– Plaster walls
– Building framework
– Front porch and flooring
…still remain to this day.
“Step inside, and you’re stepping into over 140 years of history — and one heck of a good time.”
