The Put-in-Bay Post Office is the island’s lifeline to the mainland. Residents retrieve their mail from their Post Office boxes as there are no mailboxes on the island. No mailmen mean everyone needs a post office box.
Put-in-Bay Post Office Location
The Post Office is on the busy Langram Road. This is one of the most trafficked thoroughfares on the island. The gas station and hardware store are on either side of the post office. Downtown Put-in-Bay is less than a mile away so stopping by and picking up mailing or shipping off a package is easy.
The Shops at Compass Pointe is next door as well. This lovely complex includes the hardware store and boutiques like Dock 421 and the Little Store that sells beautiful jewelry.
The Miller Ferry brings mail during the summer months. When the lake freezes over in winter, small aircrafts deliver mail to the island instead. Despite the long journey, mail is delivered every day to the island. The dedicated staff then sorts the mail and distributes it as necessary.
The services offered are just the same as on the mainland. This includes Priority Mail, Post Parcel, Priority Mail Express and general delivery. They also sell stamps, packing supplies, and greeting cards.
The post office has always been a meeting place for island locals. They run into each other while picking up their mail and share some island gossip. It definitely has a hometown feel one doesn’t often experience at other post offices!
Visitors to the island swing by to mail postcards back to the mainland. You can find postcards at a variety of stores all over town such as the Carriage House and the Put-in-Bay T-Shirt Shop. Friends and family loves getting postcards. And you can tell them it had to travel by ferry to get to them!
