Downtown Dave: 9/11-9/20 Live Music Report
So the original reason for this weekly post is because a few years ago Paul Jeris came up to me and asked me if I wanted to write a column for Putinbay.com. I asked why? He said he reads my weekly facebook posts and watches all of the videos of bands that I post on a regular basis and he said he thought the readers would enjoy the list of live music.  Then he decided to give me the name downtown Dave because I am always downtown Put in Bay. So that is why every week I share my thoughts and give the readers the band schedule. Being downtown that often listening to music brings us to the events of this week’s post. More after the music!

Put-in-Bay Live Music Schedule 9/11-9/20

As you can see from this week’s music schedule a lot of the venues do not have daily music scheduled. But that should not stop you from coming to Put in Bay. The weather is still fantastic and there is still lots to do on the island. Sometimes just taking a walk through the many parks on the island will do a lot for somebody’s mental health. Or even finding a place to watch the sunset with somebody special can make a day special.

My Thoughts For The Week

So as many of you know the Fulcos played at the Beer Barrel a lot this season. They played 66 shows. Now I did not see every show but I did my best to maybe watch them play at least 20 times. Why? Well there set list was always different and they played a lot of songs that I have not heard live in a long time. Plus I would watch them and they would come and watch me play softball. They would also give me a shout out when they played a Green Day song. (They are one of my favorites) Sometimes I would watch them play for 30 minutes sometimes I would stay a few hours. I do like a lot of the other musicians that play. But for me they became like family. You see them out and about and we would just talk and I got to learn about them as a family and as a band. They called me last week and needed an 6am ride to the Miller Ferry. They had a few days off and wanted to go home to Florida for a few days. I said it was too early for me but stop over and get a golf cart from me and leave it at the Miller Ferry and I would pick it up later that day. So on Saturday night I was there watching the Fulcos and Jessie was playing a bass guitar for maybe 3 songs and after he was done he unplugged it and gave it to me. Now they do that on other shows when they play in Florida but it was not a regular occurrence on Put in Bay. So for me it was special. I even got a special shout out about softball and my post on promoting live music on Put in Bay. So on Sunday I went back for there last show to get the guitar signed. I am not an autograph hound or somebody that looks a musicians as special people. It is just a profession that they choose in life. I am sure that most of you if you put the time into it like the Fulcos you could be a musician also. So we talked for a bit before they played that night and I learned more about them. They are no different then me. Just a lot younger. The dad is close to my age and still rocking. Now the guitar will be hung in my office but I am going to try to learn how to play it. Why? I really do not know but I have enough time this off season to try.

So then we have a celebration every year when the last boat leaves the island on Labor Day. Well I talk to everybody especially the musicians. So I was talking to Pat Shepard for a few minutes. I really do enjoy his shows but being he plays during the afternoon I do not see him as often as I like because my afternoons are busy with guests. But after we were done I started walking away and he walked back towards me and thanked me for doing this column every week and talking about the bands. That is really the reason I do this. The Thank You that I get from the musicians and the people that reach out in person about my thoughts every week gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling that I am doing a good job and people enjoy my posts. So in your job if you supervise workers or have coworkers give compliments. It would surprise you how that makes them feel. It is even more important with your children.

I do want to mention an event coming up the 15th-17th. We have the Put in Bay Road races. It is a free event and always a lot of fun. I bet if you attend you will come back every year.
