More accustomed to speed boats? Happier at the bar than on the water? Kayak the Bay offers a very special way to see Put-in-Bay with an activity that anyone can learn. Kayaks are paddle manned watercraft that are very stable in the water. You do get a bit of workout while you take in the beautiful views at a slightly slower speed.
Kayak the Bay is located on Bayview Avenue next to Oak Point State Park. The location is easily accessed by Put-In-Bay Taxi or Golf Cart Rental. They offer both sit in and sit atop kayaks. Their watercraft collection is quite large, which makes it easy for big groups to take part. Individuals can rent kayaks for $25/hour.
Kayaks stay close to the shore, away from the speed boats. If you choose to tour the island alone, you are free to paddle all around the islands. Kayak the Bay even rents tubes if you want to hang out in the water on hot days.
Guided Tours
Kayak the Bay offers a variety of guided tours. The popular Gibraltar Island tour is a mix of walking and kayaking. A special opportunity to visit Gibraltar Island, which isn’t always open to the public, this tour emphasizes the ecosystems of Lake Erie.
Gibraltar Island is home to Ohio State University’s freshwater research facility. The knowledgeable staff of Kayak the Bay updates the tour on the current research being down in order to continue to preserve Lake Erie. Other sites include Cooke Castle, Perry’s Lookout, and the glacial grooves. $10 from each ticket is donated to the scholarship program at Stone Laboratory.
For something a little romantic, opt for the Sunset Tour. This one hour tour takes you to the limestone cliffs on the west side of South Bass Island. Paddle through Green and Rattlesnake Island during a majestic sunset.
Water Trails
Additionally, the Lake Erie Islands Conservatory publishes a self-guided water trail around South Bass Island to make sure you get all of the best Put-in-Bay views. A Kayak from Kayak the Bay is the perfect way to experience the Put-in-Bay Water Trails. Just be prepared for a workout, as it does go around the entire island, showing you the best views from the shore from all angles.
Kayak the Bay is a unique activity that allows you to truly take in the natural wonders that make this part of the world so amazing.
