OktGOATerfest in August

Don’t be alarmed, this isn’t another Christmas in July thing for the island. Instead it’s an opportunity to celebrate the start of the Goat’s version of German Oktoberfest (which really takes place in September) here on the island at Das Lokal, the Biergarten at the Goat Soup and Whiskey, on Saturday, August 3rd. How can that be, you ask? Well, to mark the start of OktGOATerfest, Scott and Caroline Jackson will be tapping a keg from the first shipment of this season’s imported Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier. Phil Yan and his polka band will be on hand to tap the keg at 2 p.m. to kick off a six-week celebration of Bier, Brats and Polka culminating in the official OktGOATerfest on Saturday, September 14th, with the Phil Yan Polka Band. In August the Deutscher Musik Verein will be there on Saturday, the 10th, and the Phil Yan Polka Band on Saturday, the 24th. A band to be announced will play Labor Day Weekend.

Thank You Maggie Beckford From The LEIHS

In 2004, Maggie Beckford was elected as the Board President for Lake Erie Islands Historical Society. Over the years her dedication and leadership to LEIHS have made her a valued member. Her long list of qualifications and skills have made her the perfect candidate for this position. For that reason, members have decided year after year to re-elect her to the presidency. As it comes close to two decades serving in this position, we want to extend the greatest gratitude on behalf of all members to our President, Maggie Beckford.

Lake Erie Takes Honors

Lake Erie recently took honors as the best lake in the United States from USA TODAY. Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes, was named by USA TODAY’s 10Best as the top lake in the United States. In a reader vote, Lake Erie topped Geneva Lake in Wisconsin as the top body of water surrounded by land (what other kind of lakes are there?). Lake Erie borders Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania. “It may be the shallowest of North America’s Great Lakes, but Lake Erie has a massive amount of potential when it comes to both tourism and outdoor adventure,” the 10Best entry read. “Buffalo, Cleveland, and Toledo are just a few of the storied cities that can be explored along the Erie shore, while recreation opportunities range from fishing to bird-watching to shipwreck diving.” Three of the five Great Lakes made the top 10.

Blandings Turtle Update

Kristin Stanford reports that the Blandings turtle that was found in June and fitted with a monitor has been seen by Missi Kowalski in her garden and then a week later by Tom Thanasiu in his yard. Another person reported seeing her on the road and moved her into the woods. Sounds like she’s on a mission.
