Oak Point State Park
At just 1.5 acres Oak Point State Park at the west end of Put-in-Bay harbor may be small but due to its location right next to downtown Put In Bay, it’s one of the busiest parks in the state. Offering day-use amenities such as a rental shelter house, restroom facility, and transient docks it offers a nice reprieve from the excitement of downtown Put In Bay. The docks are free to use and come with a 12-hour limit.

Among the New Things
A lot has been going on as we head into the coming season. There’s new police officer housing at the Frederick property on Erie Street. The new porch on the old Nissen house behind Mossbacks sure looks great. Workers were seen at Miller’s downtown dock putting in new underground utility lines. Topsy’s is having some exterior work done. The roof repair work at the Boardwalk has been wrapped up. Out at the airport, work on a new parking lot has been ongoing, and across the street, the Jacksons are getting a new waterline. If you haven’t been on the island since last year, you may notice the new signs at the entrances to DeRivera Park. Members of the Crew’s Nest will find a big change at the kiddie pool, plus there’s been a bathhouse updating, too. At Oak Point State Park there are some much-needed upgrades to the inside of the restrooms with new stall dividers, lighting, emergency lighting, hand dryers and a few others.

Celebration of New Ministry
Bishop Anne Jolly will be with us on Thursday, May 29th, at 5 p.m., the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord, to celebrate with us as we formally institute Fr. Bob as Rector of St. Paul’s. There will be a light reception afterward. Please spread the word and mark your calendars for this very special event.

Museum Update
FYI for all you island history buffs, thrift shoppers, auction lovers and adventurers. The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum will open on Friday, May 16th, and so will the Resale Shop. The next day on Saturday, the 17th, the same day as the Island Wide Garage Sale, its Museum Storage Sale will take place. Put the museum on your list of places to stop when you’re making the rounds that day. On Saturday, June 21st, the Museum will have its Wine Silent Auction at the Ohio Wine Festival at Heineman Winery. The following Wednesday, the 25th, the museum’s trip to North Bass is tentatively scheduled. Stay tuned. This event is still up in the air.

Trimotor Mystery Story
“The Problem of the Tin Goose” by Edward D. Hoch is one of the stories in his book “More Things Impossible,” the second volume in his two books with stories about impossible crimes. This is on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/More-Things…/dp/B00GP49IBC and is free with Kindle Unlimited. In the story, a Ford Tri-Motor lands normally but the cockpit is locked from inside. The pilot is found stabbed, dead and alone in the cockpit. This is the first Tin Goose mystery we have heard of.

Please Leave Fawns Alone
Each spring good intentioned people come across fawns that may look like they have been abandoned, but human intervention is unnecessary. Fawns are born nearly scentless (so predators cannot find them easily). They also have spots that serve as camouflage and are able to stand soon after being born, but as a protective tactic will remain hidden.
It is common for female deer in urban areas to place fawns around homes, backyards or flower beds. The mother placed it there because she felt it would be safe (often intentionally near humans).
To protect her fawn, the mother will spend very little time with it. This is to prevent attracting predators to the fawn’s location. She will leave her fawn in various hiding places for long periods of time, returning several times a day to nurse it. By staying away, the mother is protecting it. Fawns will begin following their mothers at four weeks old. When they are two months old, fawns are able to forage for themselves and are completely weaned from their mother.

Traveling
Russ and Lisa Brohl were in Ireland with Mike and Susan Byrnes. Although Russ has captained some very huge lake freighters, he let Mike do all the driving on the left side of the narrow, hedgelined roads.
Amanda and Jason Buttrey from Chapman Rd. were on a cruise from Puerto Rico where they visited a Barcardi Rum distillery. The couple also spent time in Curaçao.
Paul Jeris from the Island Club was spotted at the Polar Arctic Circle in Finland.
Craig and Annemarie Eriksen visited their son Christian (PIBHS Class of 1998) and his wife in North Carolina. Christian enjoys working as a helicopter pilot.
