Get Ready For Labor Day at the Bay
Time for Labor Day weekend. This is the last 3 day weekend of 2026. Still time to visit us on Put in Bay. Great entertainment schedule this weekend. But 1st what is Labor Day?
It is observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.
More after the music!
Put-in-Bay Live Music Schedule 9/4-9/13
As you can see from this week’s music schedule a lot of the venues do not have daily music scheduled. But that should not stop you from coming to Put in Bay. The weather is still fantastic and there is still lots to do on the island. Sometimes just taking a walk through the many parks on the island will do a lot for somebody’s mental health. Or even finding a place to watch the sunset with somebody special can make a day special.

My Thoughts For The Week
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
Do you know how we celebrate it on Put in Bay every year. We have a party of course. It is unofficially called white spider. Everybody gathers at the Miller Ferry Dock and waves off the last boat of the summer season. Now the Miller Ferry will run until at least December and a few times even to Jan 1st. So it is really not the last boat but it is just another reason for Put in Bay to have a party. This is an awesome gathering of workers and business owners to celebrate the end of the tourist season. Now we have many more events all the way till Oct 24th weekend so you still have lots of time to come up and enjoy the island. I will highlight some of the events Like Halfway to St Pattys day, Fall Ball and of course Halloween before Downtown Dave goes on vacation for the winter.
