Ice Breaking Up Around Put-in-Bay

Commiserations to all of Put-in-Bay’s ice fishers, but you’ve had your time. For everyone else, this weekend’s weather is a cause for celebration! Sustained 40 MPH winds from the southwest, with gusts nearing 50, are doing what a week’s worth of 70 degree weather wouldn’t, breaking down the ice locked around South Bass Island and pushing it away! The Miller Ferry service to Put-in-Bay is always weather dependent in the spring, because we don’t know when the ice will be gone, this seiche is likely to have us headed for a best case timeline!

What's The Big Deal About A Little Wind?

Picture the huge piles of snow that the plows push onto your treelawn. It freezes in a huge pile, and even days of warm weather isn’t enough to melt it all. That’s because the frozen inside remains insulated by the snow around it. Ditto the frozen lake. A weeks worth of 70 and sunny wouldn’t do all that much melting of the ice around Put-in-Bay.

A day of 40 MPH winds though? That’s going to send the water underneath the ice flowing hard and fast, creating micro cracks and fissures in the ice sheet above. These cracks are going to turn one huge sheet of ice into thousands of little chunks, and little chunks, well they melt easy!

We Aren't Quite There Yet Though!

If you check out our webcams, you’ll already see some open water flowing in certain parts. You might get the idea we’re even further along than we are. But the last parts to break up are always the most important ones. Gibraltar Island acts as a sort of protector of the ice in the Put-in-Bay Harbor, keeping it locked in like a jigsaw piece.

That’s the part that’s got to give! In years’ past they’ve even sent out airboats once the ice was close to gone, to help break up the last bits and unlock the Miller Ferry‘s Harbor dock.
