B-Dock Fundraiser
DeRivera Park Manager John Galvin tells us the B-Dock rebuilding project is going a bit over budget. To help raise a few shekels to help with the overage, John contacted Gillmor Ordnance Cannon Factory in Old Fort, Ohio, to help design something that could be made from all the old aluminum electrical wiring that was removed from the old dock last fall. They came up with a design for a “B’Dock” aluminum plaque. A 3D design was printed and then used to create a sand mold. The result was an oval, Euro sticker-sized aluminum plaque that reads “PUT-IN-BAY B-Dock THE PLACE TO BE” If you’re interested in one, text or call John at (419) 341-1573.

Smallmouth Bass Explorers
From a 20-year bass gill net survey and new acoustic telemetry work, Ohio Division of Wildlife fisheries biologists have discovered how far Lake Erie smallmouth bass will travel to find new underwater territories. One tagged lake smallmouth traversed 421 miles from Fairport, Ohio, to the north shore and back and then to Buffalo in a year’s time. Another swam 921 miles over a year and half — it was tagged off North Bass Island, swam up the Detroit River into Lake St. Clair and then back, twice — which was the longest documented movement of a smallmouth bass. Lake Erie smallmouth bass don’t move very far, tending to stay within about 10 miles of where they were tagged.
