Downtown Dave: 8/7-8/16 Live Music Report

Many of you ask, does Amazon deliver? Yes they do and the Miller Ferry brings it over every day. I cannot thank them enough for doing this service for the people who live and work here. Sam’s even delivers to the boat but I have to go ashore every 5 weeks to get things that cannot get delivered. So this week I had to go to Sam’s, the bank, Lowes, Walmart and get a haircut. This sounds easy but between the ferry ride and driving that is 2 hours right there. My car was so packed I could not get even 1 extra pineapple in the car. ( I serve fresh fruit every day for breakfast). Now they do sell groceries on the island but nothing is ever on sale when it comes to food. They all have to pay extra to ship things over. Too bad we do not have a bridge or even a tunnel LOL. But for all of us islanders this is something that we have to do regularly. You can buy a season passenger pass but not a car season pass. So anytime I take a car over you have to take advantage of it and fill your car to the brim. Now I do have a car on the mainland so if I have a quick trip I can walk over and drive my other car. Most islanders also have a car on the other side. But the real challenge is for the 300 plus that live on the island full time. That becomes a real test because the boat usually shuts down the end of December then does not restart till sometime in March. So you have to have a lot of freezer space to stock up before the boats stop running. Now the hardware store does have your essentials when the boat stops, but if you want anything special you need to stock up. Now you can fly over and bring a few things but it is cheaper for me to fly roundtrip to Florida then it is to fly roundtrip to Put in Bay. The other issue living on an island is the boat schedule. Your life revolves around the boat schedule. It seems like I am always trying to make the next boat. I sometimes forget that if I miss the boat I can get the next one in 30 minutes. Then while I am waiting maybe I can catch a quick nap. LOL Speaking of the boat schedule, unless you are staying on the island for more then 3 days leave your car at the dock when you come and visit. .Just use a cab, golf cart or walk. I have seen lines last as much as 3 hours long on Sunday to get off the island. If you bring a car you really need to plan and get in line no later then 9am to not have the long wait. But I would not trade living on Put in Bay for anything at this time of my life. This is my home and everybody that lives here are my family and friends. Sometimes the best time to visit is during the week because you can really relax.
