Five Great Reasons To Come To Put-in-Bay in August!

As we count down another month on the calendar, we’re forced to contend with the reality that we’re nearer the end of the Put-in-Bay season than the beginning. What started in April with our fisher friends from all over the country filling their boats with walleye, into the peak of our summer season now, we’ve got the month of August and Labor Day weekend remaining as the last of the true “island at capacity” Put-in-Bay season. If that’s not reason enough to get you up here in August, here’s five more!

Declaration 250: July 31-August 2

An absolutely massive three day event arrives at the Bay. Technically the first night is in July, but the lion’s share of the event is our introduction to August. The nation descends on Put-in-Bay to commemorate the date of the actual signing of the Declaration of Independence. Three nights of concerts, with ASIA, Jefferson Starship and Lee Greenwood performing Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Put-in-Bay’s own Bob Gatewood opens for ASIA and Jefferson Starship.

There will also be performances by the Ohio State and Bowling Green Marching Bands, as well as military bands. The Goodyear Blimp will be in attendance, and there will be military flyovers as well. The weekend culminates with a massive fireworks show. It’s one of the biggest events in PIB history!

Lakeview Volleyball Battle of Put-in-Bay: August 8-9

One of Put-in-Bay’s great annual traditions arrives on August 8th and 9th. The Lakeview Volleyball Battle of Put-in-Bay tournament returns. With recreational and competitive divisions, you get players of all skill levels congregating together on the island for fun and sport.

This tournament has been held at Put-in-Bay for decades now and it’s always one of the great weekends of the year. The volleyball players from all over the midwest are a bunch of fun, and great people to hang out with at the downtown bars when the games are complete!

Benson Ford Ship House Tour: August 9

The Benson Ford Ship House opens its doors to the public for the final time in 2026. This incredibly unique home, which is one of Put-in-Bay’s most iconic landmarks, is the forecastle of Henry Ford’s freighter that spent its original life transporting coal and iron ore across Lake Erie. Now it oversees her waters as a private residence.

The tour allows you to see the interior of the home, which is maintained as the forecastle was all those years ago. You can get tickets and learn more here, including a virtual tour of the interior. It’s a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning!

Everybody knows that a dollar just doesn’t seem to go as far as it used to, and a summer weekend at Put-in-Bay can be a big ask. But if you’ve got the flexibility in your schedule to come to the island between Sunday and Thursday, we think you’d be pretty surprised at how much summer fun you can have at a low price!

The Island Club and the Put-in-Bay Condos have amazing midweek rates that will keep a large group together under one roof. If you’re only a couple, you might consider the Commodore Resort, who have budget midweeks right on Delaware Ave. downtown.

Summer Is Running Out

Put-in-Bay sees guests joining us all the way until the occasionally quite brisk end of October, but when it comes to the full Put-in-Bay experience, huge summer crowds, pool bars, being out on the water, well we hate to say it, but you’re starting to run out of time! A week left of July, then we’ve got August, one week into September is Labor Day weekend, and after that things really start to wind down.

Put-in-Bay remains a great place to visit in September and October, but it’s a decidedly different one from the summer months. So if you’ve got a vision of a big Put-in-Bay getaway this summer, it’s time!
